Page File 

Page File is a hidden system file used by the Windows operating system. Windows will store data in this file when the computer’s RAM is filled. It is also called virtual memory. This name is used for page files because it needs to be distinguished from RAM, a physical memory. The file is hidden by default. You won’t see it unless you ask File Explorer to show protected operating system files.

There is an automation process in which Windows will move data from the computer, which does not use RAM, to the page file to free up the space in the RAM. Every version of Windows will have a  file. And it performs more quickly on a modern PC with a speedy drive and a different type of SSC compared to older ones with lower mechanisms.

Advantages of page file

The Page file will prevent system crashes because of insufficient memory. When physical RAM is ultimately used, the page file will act as a backup. And it will allow the system to continue running by moving out less crucial data to the file.

The page file will allow the operating system to extend the adequate size of the computer memory more than the physical RAM. This is important to run large applications exceeding the available physical RAM.

It will provide a virtual memory, enabling the operating system to manage multiple running processes effectively and constantly. The file will help organize and prioritize data in and out of the RAM even if the total memory needs of all active processing surpass the physical RAM capacity.

Page files can also be used in conjunction with hibernation. Suppose if a system enters hibernation, the content of the RAM is stored in the  file that will allow the computer to resume its state when it is on again.


The page file offers several benefits. Since it can store and manage massive amounts of data. It is also essential to balance the virtual memory of page 5 and the physical memory of RAM for Optimal system performance. Overburdening the file can impact the system’s performance.
